Hurtwood Media A2 - Exploring album artwork possibilities
Okay, so we've recieved a load of inspiration from a variety of artists and now we're looking at mainly the IMAGE!
This invloves us coming up with an album cover and design that fits our theme and actracts our target audience. Some of the following are examples of some bands that have a similar look to what we intend to base our design around.
First of all Caro Emerald, her Retro and 'old school' feel that her album has is an element we'd like to portray in our album cover. Maybe we could do this by adding this 'drawing' type affect over an image of the girls that we'll capture on the day of the shoot.
Here is a link to her page which has more info on her: http://caroemerald.com/
This second album cover is named 'So Red the Rose' and is by 'Arcadia'.
I love the idea of an illustration for an album cover, if not maybe in the album booklet that we could consider including as part of the package.
Another aspect that I like about this cover is the amount of pure 'whiteness' that it includes. As our video consists of a large amount of purity and bold contrasts of black and white I think this will link nicely together. As well as this I think the pureness attracts the viewers eye.
http://www.arcadiacrew.com/index1.asp
This girl band is quite low key and unknown, and hasn't been a great success in the music industry.
However this album cover of theirs has a similar set-up as to what we've envisioned to do.
In this, I think the bands name is done in quite a tacky font and colouring aswell and I feel it ruins the cover as a whole. But the way the girls are positioned in the foreground and are individually powerful is an element I'd like to produce in our cover.
Destiny's Child a girl band which is a perfect example of what we hope to achieve.
They have a reputation for promoting feminism and power. These of corse are elements that we want to portray throughout the creation of our band.
The album cover above is quite dated for our time period now but the set up of the girls is something we'd like to take further. They are in the foreground (simialr to the Stunners) and all dressed similary, making an impact on the viewer. The character on the far right, known as Beyonce Knowles, is a perfect, individual example. Her expression and body positioning is strong and this stregth has been emphasised by the contrast of the other three members.
Their smile makes them look innocent and weaker in comparrison to Beyonce, So we should definietly take this aspect into account when creating our cover and image.

Hurtwood Media A2 - Artist
From reading previous posts on my blog, you can see that the look we intend on creating is high fashion and based upon beautiful looks. At the same time we want our band to come across being itelligent, interesting and also politically socially active.
An artist that we feel has a simalarity to these qualities is a girl called 'Caro Emerald' as she crosses over our kind of image and also pushes the idea of faminisim.
Hurtwood media A2 - Our Target Audience
It is important to define our target audience so that we can focus on who it is that will be consuming our music and products.
It is useful for institutions and academics to be able to build up detailed accounts of how audiences are constructed.
We have to find ways and make sure there are ways of segmenting the audience.

Hurtwood Media A2 - Screen tests
Three of the Five girls for our music video where available today to do some initial screen tests and also to just give them a general overview of what our vision for this video is.
Afterwards, I was really reasured and excited about our choice as they all seemed really keen and also fit what it is we are looking for perfectly :)
Which is so reasuring!!
Dayana:
Dayana is brilliant. She has a warm presence and knows when to have a laugh, whilst understanding the seriousness of our task. She also understands how to work a camera due to previous experience.
Amber:
Amber also has a great presence and works the camera well. She plays the guitar which is to our advantage and knows how to work the camera due to previous experience.
Anastasia:
Anastasia has a lot of energy which is great for stage presence! Although I have just met her, I feel like she is very keen and will fit in brilliantly with our whole video.

Hurtwood Media A2 - Update
Yesterday, we maganed to contact the costume and make-up supplier for the school about what she may possibly have that fits our criteria to save us from going out and buying and spending money unnecessarily.
This was only brief as at the moment she is tight for time due to other commitments, but she was able to quickly answer a few queries.
She said she has suits/tuxedos that we could use, in addition to this she has a huge amount of make-up and its equipment that we could use for the girls and also as props for the Backstage set-up. Furthermore, she has a wide range of various jewerlley that she is willing to lend us.
But like I said before, at this current point in time she is unable to focus on our questions so she's asked if we could meet her breifly on Friday so she can show us the suits and various props that she is willing for us to borrow.
Massive Thank You to her!!!!!

Hurtwood Media A2 - Costume and Prop Organisation
Finla Costume and Appearence Docu
As it stand props are very similar as I have posted about prior to this.
We are yet able to begin getting any of these as well as the costumes as we are waiting to hear from the drama and costume department here at the school about whether or not they arer able to supply us with anything.
Thankfully, after a discussion between the group I am feeling quite confident with how our video work and progression is going. As soon as we hear anything from the departments here we ca get right on the case about finding our own way of getting equipment.

Hurtwood Media A2 - Storyboard Anamatic
This week we have put together our anamatic.
To do this we have to take the footage that we capture last week of the 10second, individual shots of each frame from the storyboard. By using the programe 'Final Cut Pro' we are able to edit together and create the sequence of the frames and place this in time with the track music.

Hurtwood Media A2 - Props
The main shot of our music video invloves a band scene which of course means we will have to provide the band memebers with equipment.
As this is a Duran Duran song the instruments that need to used will need to look as professional as possible!! This will all add to the Mise-En-Scene of the overall image to ensure that it is as realistic and professinoal as possible.
In our band there are 5 memebers:
With all our equipment and instruments we want to keep the colour and theme all neutrual, Black and White. This will contrast with the item of colour each performer is wearing, therefore emphasizing this element.

We also need to provide a prop list for the dressing room scene which really does need to be as realistic as possible and this will be quite difficult as there's a lot going on.

Hurtwood Media A2 - Set Design
During this week we sketched some large versions of our set desgins that we need to shoot on throughout the day of the shoot.
By doing this we are again confirming that everyone has the same visual of how the sets are going to look. In addition we are able to get a clearer idea of how each location works in relation to one another so that they aren't to different and don't juxapose in a negative way.
Stage:

Stage:
This is our intitial vision that we had of the stage and band set up.
It consists of two white, circular layers that sit upon one another raised up from the floor. We'd like to do this to enable us to have a variety of different height and angles of shots.
In addition to this it also gives us the ability to do some moving, rotation shots that we hope would look very affective.
Backstage:
The backstage set up is a typical, simple, make-up set that needs to be packed and full on.
There will be mirrors of which the girls will be using for some affective, reflective shots of them doing things such as their make-up and hair.
Mise-En-Scene is a HUGE priority for this shot as it needs to be So realistice and beliveable, and to do this we will need a lot of props.
Photo-Shoot:
The original intention for this particular shot was suppossed to be a catwalk/runway but due to the difficulty and impracticality of this we decided to change it to a Photo-Shoot set.
So the set up of this is very simple and straight forward, which is Great.
We plan on having a white drop/screen of which will shoot against. In this we will also be able to see the lighting and also photographer getting in and invloved in the shoot itself.
The model and maybe even some of the band members will be posing and puttinf on a front that she is enjoying herself.
Below is a video about our drawings :D
Hurtwood Media A2 - Costume and Look
We've put together a visual presentation showing some examples of the type of style, look and overall colour scheme that we plan to have our characters dressed in.
By doing this it further ensures that everyones is clear on what it is that we want people dressed in.

Hurtwood Media A2 - Storyboard and Animatic production
First we started by storyboarding all our shots in as much detail as possible.
Before today there were a few shots that I had to fill in as we were missing a few. Luckily this wasn't to difficult to clean up as we had quite a scedualed and reliable timeline to work from.
Before filming our storyboard to create the Animatic from we had to white balance the 'Sony NX5' to ensure we had the best quality of footage possible and the colouring is all correct.
Using Bluetac we stuck up each storyboard sheet onto a blank wall. Then we filmed each individual shot for a minimum of ten seconds.

Hurtwood Media A2 - Importance of a Storyboard
After putting together our initial idea's, producing our concept and creating a solid timeline the next step is making a storyboard. A storyboard visually tells the story of an animaition, in our case the video, panel by panel almost like a comic book.
The storyboard should convey some of the following information:
This master document will contain every detail for your video production, not just the visuals to go with every sentence, but a list of all the outstanding stills required, or cast and props.
We've tried to include all the shots and footage required and this takes time! Our aim is to do it as throughly and proper as possible and this invloves including imformation such as --> a shoot list (or route march) for the shoot, instructions for camera and director, instructions for the editor such as any graphics that are required, any graphics instructions, or post production effects.
Having a storyboard is so important. By having it all down on paper the whole programme is therefore perfect and everyone, the cast, colleagues and production team is in full agreement.
The storyboard should convey some of the following information:
- What charaters are in the frame, and how are they moving?
- What are the characters saying to each other, if anything?
- How much time has passed between the last frame of the storyboard and the current one?
- Where the "camera" is in the scene? Close or far away? Is the camera moving?
This master document will contain every detail for your video production, not just the visuals to go with every sentence, but a list of all the outstanding stills required, or cast and props.

A storyboard is a complete master document, the complete blue print of your corporate video, and it’s something that all people can understand, so there’s no mystery or confusion.

Whn it finally comes to the day of shooting everything should go to plan and be as organised as possible.
It’s everything about your corporate video on paper.
